Novel sodium/hydrogen exchanger NHA2 - A quest for biological function
NHA2 is a recently cloned mammalian sodium/hydrogen exchanger (NHE) with unknown biological function. Although almost ubiquitously expressed, NHA2 is highly expressed in a subset of specialized cells including osteoclasts, pancreatic β-cells, distal tubular cells of the kidney or neurons. Epidemiological evidence links NHA2 to the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension. Thus, research on NHA2 will likely shed light on the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, diseases nota bene, which pose a major burden to our society.
