Structural and mechanistic studies of lipid/drug transporters and their therapeutic relevance
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transmembrane proteins use the energy of bound ATP to drive the transport of hydrophobic substances, such as lipids and drugs, across all cell membranes. For example, they act as multidrug transporters important both in innate and acquired multi-drug resistance as well as in drug bioavailability. In addition, their expression is of prognostic value in certain diseases. Inhibitors, including inhibiting antibodies, might therefore be both of therapeutic and diagnostic use.
