Divalent metal ion transporters (DMT) are vital for iron uptake in mammalian enterocytes and many other cell types. Dysfunction of the divalent metal ion transporters DMT1 and NRAMP1 are associated with iron deficiency anaemia, iron overload disorders and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

We desire to obtain high-resolution structural data of prokaryotic DMT homologues in parallel with their functional characterisation to understand the mechanism of ion transport, ion specificity and regulation.
